"Plantain Children" (2026)

this painting was inspired by a photo i took of plantains as the rising sun shone on them in the early morning. it was this moment of awareness and attentiveness to the life of the plantain. witnessing the varying periods of growth across them. i tried to capture that feeling of awe at the miracle of life i felt in that moment, and this painting is just another in my endless fascination with the life this planet produces.

i started working on the sketches for this painting not long before the exhibition "Grief: Love Persisting" and was working on it throughout the course of the exhibition. the exhibition cycle definitely played a part as i developed this piece. it felt like a sort of response or echo to "Banana Graveyard" because of the sort of reversed origin of that painting; being about bananas that had recently died.

i also had a conversation about this piece while it was in progress about how plantains reproduce, and the asexual nature of it, basically cloning themselves. i thought about that a lot in relation to how animals (by large) reproduce, two separate group of cells forming something new. i imagined eons of plantains cloning itself endlessly to see all of time. yet wondering how close is the clone. then thinking about my human lineage across millennia, and wondering how far my own cells have gone in my ancestry to create this self.

being a part of the exhibition "Grief: Love Persisting" was such a wonderful honour. it was my first time sharing work locally in an exhibition context, and first time being able to be with the work and able to talk to people about it. i really enjoyed getting to interact with people and share the stories behind the paintings and exchange thoughts on grief, art, and life. it felt so healing to engage with such intimate grief in a public place speaking about it openly. hats off to @aleemscorner and @stazlab for creating and curating such a beautiful and ethereal space and time. i enjoyed sharing space and conversation with so many brilliant artists and i learnt so much more about their practices and pieces. the artist talk was such a wonderful space of vulnerability, offering and conversation.
throughout the exhibition cycle, and even still, i've been processing a lot more grief, and i'm really thankful to have been in an exhibition around this complex theme. i'm grateful to be able to share work and words. 🌺🩷✨

what would you do if you're the prime minister of a country coming under constant questioning for your courses of action?

of course you employ distraction and theatrics, better yet politricks?

and which group do you throw shade at to distract and get people riled up??

to think in such unprecedented times, our prime minister, who is supposed to be the elected representative of all Jamaicans is making anti-trans remarks, risking the harm of one of Jamaica's most vulnerable groups of people. the world sits on the edge of another world war and Andrew is here sewing discord???

also bringing a 'gift' for the opposition party and it's a prop so you and your comrades can laugh at the 'losers'?

is this high school??????

here's a little animation experiment i worked on last week. really just wanted to see if i could visualize this idea i had, and this turned out better than i expected. process-wise it was very interesting as there were some challenges i just didn't know would be there while storyboarding, but it was a really good learning experience.

i just painted each frame in Photoshop and then used a gif maker to put them all together. i wanted to keep it bare bones at least from an animation standpoint.

this piece is inspired by a sculpture/installation i saw in Cuba during my short visit in 2024. it's one of the things that's kept coming back to me as i revisit my memories of being there.

with the United States' heightened embargo on Cuba and its inhumane blockade on oil, threatening to starve the population, i've been thinking about my time there a lot, and my own history with the country.

when i was really young i had terrible asthma, i would spend weeks in the hospital ward, countless nights on nebulizers and prednisone. then when i was 8/9 a Cuban doctor came to our hospital at Annotto Bay, Dr. Ramos. he undoubtedly saved my life; he prescribed different medication and got me a spacer for my asthma pumps, which slowly worked wonders for my young lungs. without Dr. Ramos i may not be here today. and I'm sure the impact of the doctors on the Caribbean goes far beyond that for the decades they have been helping all across the region.

my heart breaks for the people of Cuba. words cannot describe or give any justice to the beautiful culture i got a glimpse of while there.

my heart breaks at our so-called political representatives' callousness and spinelessness. submitting to the whims of an imperialist state killing civilians in the Caribbean, fueling war all across the globe, and run by pedophiles.

"Growing Sea Legs"

2026. digital painting. 11"x11".

this painting was inspired by my childhood experiences of going to the beach. we would go annually in the summer, and it was like the event of the summer for me and my sister. we would spend hours in the water despite neither of us knowing how to swim. and when we got home, especially lying down to sleep, my body always felt like the sea was still rolling through it, as if i was still at the beach in the water. reflecting on the feeling, it was almost magical to experience. this painting tries to capture some of the feelings i had while laying in bed after.

this is also my first digital painting in a few months, and first of the year. i'm really excited to get back into digital painting, and to see how far i can go this year. physically painting will remain the centre of my practice, but being able to experiment digitally is an added joy.

"Teeth Like These"

this painting is a conjunction of stories put together. the title comes from a duppy story my parents used to tell about a couple asking a man for directions i think and he bares these horrible, shark-like teeth. they run away and then a little further they saw another man and he asked what happened and they were telling him the story and then he said "you mean teeth like these!?" and he bared the same shark-like teeth. that's how i remember them ending the story. i like to imagine they all just laughed about it. that's the story behind the teeth.

the wider creature, so to speak, is somewhat of an attempt at alchemy; a wolf trying to turn into a bat. wolves and bats are two animals i've been heavily fascinated with since i was a child. and i remember in high school watching this documentary about how the introduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park saved it ecosystem and expanded its biodiversity. it was so powerful to see. and i have a deep respect for wolves.

bats have also been a recurring motif in my life. beyond the affinity for the Batfamily, there used to be fruit bats who would be at my apple tree as a teenager. and i would hear and see them in the evenings wooshing past. and tho the black moths we often call duppy bats aren't really bats, i always associated bats as creatures of the night, and with darkness and mystery. bats also play a very important role in the ecosystem, contributing to pollen distribution, insect population control among other things. i think bats are really cool.

this painting represents a surrealistic view of what i'm calling the birth of experience (don't hold me to that name), which is the idea that the universe is born with us, with the very opening of our eyes everything is created. it's just a point in thought about the experiential nature of the universe.

i see this painting as sort of like a cross-section of myself.
there are these two opposing yet linked waters, in constant tussle that i see as myself and my shadow, my sun and my moon. both are navigating having to coexist but still be so sharply defined. then there are the fields of gold and the fields of green, perfectly separated from the other areas. i'm still waiting to understand what those fully mean and i'm sure i will explore them more in the future.

here's me adding what would be some of the final few touches to this painting. this piece took so long to reveal itself, and still i feel like i don't really understand it. but i'm sure it will all come in time.

creating physical art for me can feel so different from digital art. i really enjoy going into the unknown with my physical pieces, pulling directly from my subconscious, referencing dreams, listening to the painting. it feels so much more present and direct. i'm so aware of the materials and the physicality of it all, feeling much more in my body versus feeling like a conduit for my mind. and i really appreciate this because i've come to learn and understand so much of myself through paint, as silly as that may sound.

yet, it's so uncertain it's almost scary; this spreading paint on canvas, and my imposter syndrome feels like it gets a second wind. i've been doing art for so long, yet i'm sooo new to painting, and it feels like none of the confidence I've earned in my other practices translate here. yet i know i have to persist, even on days like today (yesterday) where it feels like i am so far from myself, and everything else. like i'm in this very black box; before anything, before nothing.

"so you want to be an artist?"

this question is what i asked myself at the beginning of this journey, and it's been coming back to me lately, whenever this feels too hard, too much to keep pursuing. i made this sort of video collage investigating this same question of myself, and i watch it whenever i feel at my lowest.

i remind myself this is chosen, even with all of the dregs i must sift through to get to the unknown.

i keep this quote by Georgia O'Keefe close, "Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing-and keeping the unknown always beyond you." she understood it so well.

i keep journeying to the unknown, and it's scary as fuck. with every piece, it feels like unearthing more of myself, to better understand myself, to meet myself in the blank expanse of the canvas.

i spent so much time wanting to be an artist before realizing i already was.

"so you want to be an artist?"

i usually work intuitively, and sometimes sketch elsewhere as the ideas come, trying always to honour the feelings i'm experiencing. usually as i work on a piece, i will develop more thoughts and ideas and feelings surrounding it, which can steer direction.

it's my second exhibition with them (and my second physical exhibition overall), and it's a joy to be able to work with them again and start the year so positively, i'm honoured to be featured along with so many other talented and wonderful artists.

i'm beyond elated to share that my diptych "Where Are We Going?" was selected to be a part of the RE/FRACTION: Beyond The Vanishing Point exhibition by @thouartwoman

it's my second exhibition with them (and my second physical exhibition overall), and it's a joy to be able to work with them again and start the year so positively, i'm honoured to be featured along with so many other talented and wonderful artists.

thank you so much to @thouartwoman, @blinc.love, @_narrativecuratorial, and all of the other sponsors/partners for organizing this exhibition in a time where the value of artists in the world is being questioned more than ever. art can be a very unforgiving undertaking, but moments like this; being exhibited, feeling appreciated for the work you've been doing, are priceless. thank you so much for making a home for these pieces.

leaning into posting more chaotically this year because a schedule just feels so constricting, and i end up not posting much.

here's some bts of this painting i'm working on from a few days ago. it's inspired by and related to another painting i did as the year ended (I'll post that one soon enough dw)

i'm still unraveling all I've learned and experienced this past year, it's been quite a year, and i think my biggest lesson was the importance of friendship and community, and how fulfilling they can be. my laptop's charger hasn't been working for over a month, and my drawing pad, since around the hurricane, so i haven't worked on a recap post or anything for the year yet, but i have had a lot of time to dig deeper and connect more with my reasons for creating, and grow my connection with paint and traditional art. but i am so excited to get back to digital art (when the forces finally deliver the replacements), i've really missed it.

this painting is based on a breakfast i had with two of my friends last year in April, and it was a morning and moment that stayed with me throughout the year, so i decided to paint it.

you'll recognize these from their place throughout the film as they popped up. these were all taken from journals, or notes i wrote throughout the year. i had a lot of them gathered but these are the ones that spoke to me most during the film's compilation.

making this film was a labour of love, sort of a gift to my future selves. in rewatching the first film, i saw how much was in the film that i didn't even realize i was putting into it at the time of making it.
and i know that it'll be the same with this one, already it means so much more than the sum of its parts because of all that's happened after it. we live in time, and that's where the original concept found me, thinking about time and how we move through it, around and back, revolving, uncertain. Saturn's Square right now feels like going around to come back where you were, but stronger; a square as some form of foundation. a foundation built from love and loss, and the glorious in between.

i'm sure that through time, my thoughts on it will expand and evolve, and that's exciting.

the last month and so has been heavy with emotions, dreams, and life's strange happening. these paintings are me trying to capture or make sense of some of it.

1. "The Wind Like A Hammer To The Ground" - this was the first painting i made after the hurricane, and this was how the wind just felt like it was slamming against the earth.

2. "Banana Graveyard" - having to see all the banana trees that had fallen and cleaning up the area filled me with so much grief, this painting very much poured out of me

3. "Spiral of Change"

4. "Para Mis Madres" - this painting was another one that just emerged, and it was inspired by an image in my mind's eye of my matriarchal ancestors offering me a seat. it felt like honouring them in a way.

5. "To Raze" - things lost in the (metaphorical) fire

6. "Face In The Fixture"

7. "Shifting, Changing, In Between Worlds"

8. "The Power of the Sun"

9. "What Matters Most?"

It felt very personal this time, the creation of this film, and i had a lot more time and room to work on this one. it became sort of like an abstract glimpse of what the end of 26 through to the middle of 27 was for me. i don't really know what this one means yet, but i'm excited to unwrap it over the next few years.

The runtime is 8 minutes flat. Coming December 16, 2025.
